Zircaloy 4 Zirconium Alloy Tubes
Zirconium alloy-4 is a variant of zirconium alloy-2, but without nickel and with a higher, more tightly controlled iron content. Its mechanical properties are similar to those of pure zirconium, with higher strength and lower toughness, but with excellent corrosion resistance. This alloy is also used in the nuclear industry; it absorbs less hydrogen than Zircaloy-2 when corroded in water and steam.
Zircaloy-4 was developed from Zircaloy-2 with the primary objective of reducing the tendency to absorb hydrogen. As a result, the compositional specifications for Zircaloy-4 are the same as those for Zircaloy-2, except for nickel and iron, which have a maximum content of 0.007% and 0.18%, respectively.
